Fort Stanton seeking artists for temporary exhibit

Ruidoso News, N.M.

June 10--Organizers at Fort Stanton Museum Galleries remind all Lincoln County artists that June 26 is the deadline to participate in the upcoming ArtFORTArt1 exhibit.

Painting, photography, sculpture, graphics, weaving, quilting, woodcarving -- all are welcome in the temporary exhibition to run July 3 through Sept. 1. It is not a competition, and there is no entrance fee. It is requested that all pieces reflect something familiar to the fort or its environs (i.e. fort scenes, Sierra Blanca, Rio Bonito, ranch life, local scenes, historic events, etc.)

"We hope local artists will have their work seen, and maybe purchased, by a wide audience from all over," said ArtFORTArt1 volunteer chairperson Matthew Midgett. "Many of our 5,000-plus annual visitors come from other states and foreign countries, and their time at the fort might be a great opportunity for them to acquire a piece of fine southwestern art to take home."

Space is limited, so earlier entries will be given priority. This is a non-judged, inclusive exhibition of local art. All pieces for consideration must be delivered to the Fort Stanton Museum during regular hours, on or before June 26. Paintings and photographs must be matted or framed. Artists are encouraged to provide contact information and prices on any pieces for sale, so that interested buyers may get in touch with them directly.

Fort Stanton Historic Site is located between Capitan and Ruidoso. The Museum Galleries were opened earlier this year with an exhibit of 1930's-era art titled "The New Deal in New Mexico."

"This latest exhibit will expose our very talented local artists to a large audience, including hundreds of visitors to the fort's annual "Fort Stanton LIVE!" living history weekend, July 12," Midgett said. "It is a great opportunity for artists of every sort."
