June 11--Rio Rancho High School was named grand champion of the annual Vans Custom Culture contest for the third time.

The grand prize winner was announced last night in New York at Industria Superstudio. RRHS art teacher Matthew Lutz and his students who designed the shoes traveled to NYC for the announcement. They were in the running with four other finalists from schools from around the country.

As winners, the school will receive $50,000 for its arts programs, and one of the designs will be put into production and sold inside select Vans and Journeys retail stores and also online. Students were given four white canvas vans and asked to design each one with a different theme. Judges narrowed the pool from 2,000 entrants to 50 semifinalists, 10 from each region. The winner from each region was chosen by internet votes and became a finalist. Judges chose the top winner.

Lutz has said this is his last year participating in the contest.
