June 11--ELKHART -- Blood, Sweat and Tears, a legendary classic rock band from the late 1960s, will perform July 11 at the Lerner Theatre in Elkhart.

The band's appearance coincides with the city's establishment of a new community award and celebration of the theater's rebirth three years ago.

Lerner General Manager David Smith announced the band's appearance during a Lerner Governing Board meeting Wednesday, June 11.

The concert will follow a dinner at the Lerner's Crystal Ballroom, where three mayors will be recognized for their support of the theater restoration. Those include Mayor Dick Moore and former mayors Jim Perron and Dave Miller.

Tickets for the concert are $75, $50 and $35.

Tickets to the dinner, including the concert, are $150, Smith said.

Blood, Sweat and Tears had a string of hits in the late 1960s and early 1970s that included "Spinning Wheel," "And When I Die," and "You've Made Me So Very Happy."

Bo Bice, who gained national attention during his competition on "American Idol" a few years ago, is touring with the band as their lead singer, according to the band's website.

Fireworks provided by INOVA Federal Credit Union are scheduled to begin shortly after the concert and will be visible from Central Park and the Civic Plaza, Smith said.

The dinner is built around the newly established community award known as the Coeur de Cerf. The phrase is French and taken from Pierre Moran, the chief of the Potawatomi Indians, and means "Heart of the Elk," according to organizers.

The award will honor individuals or groups whose work has boosted the city's quality of life.

On Saturday, July 12, the Lerner will host Bob Sander, a storyteller who performed at the Lerner in 2013 and entertained the audience with details about the history of the Lerner.
