ENP Newswire - 10 June 2014
Release date- 06062014 - Boston, MA - Environmental and engineering firm, Haley & Aldrich, today announced that the firm has won the James D.P. Farrell Brownfields Project of the Year Award for the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center project.
The award, sponsored by the Environmental Business Council (EBC), has been given to the project in recognition of the remediation and redevelopment of the former Mastex Industries Site into a new state-of-the-art research data center dedicated to supporting the growing research computing needs of the most research intensive universities in the region.
By re-using a historically polluted industrial site, the MGHPCC project has substantially improved an 8-acre block in downtown Holyoke, MA, including environmental remediation, infrastructure improvements, and the new building itself. The Holyoke location attracted funding partners with economic development missions, including the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and U.S. Bank, as it is in an economically disadvantaged area.
Demolition materials from the former mill buildings, which covered the site footprint, were incorporated into the new development with 97% of the demolition debris reused on site, keeping the material out of landfills. As a result, the building achieved LEED PLATINUM - the first university research data center to do so.
The recently completed facility is already making an impact on scientific research. The computations for the recent announcement that researchers have strong evidence of 'cosmic inflation' during the Big Bang were completed at MGHPCC.
Haley & Aldrich was recognized as part of a larger project team, which includes:
Harvard University Green Building Services
Holyoke Gas & Electric Department
Leggat McCall Properties

Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Department of Facilities
McCarter & English, LLP

About the EBC EBEE Awards
Each year, the Environmental Business Council of New England (EBC) recognizes companies, organizations and individuals for outstanding environmental/energy accomplishments in the promotion of a sustainable, clean environment through the EBEE Awards Celebration. These awards were established by the EBC to encourage companies, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and environmental professionals to serve as models for others to emulate and, in doing so, further the mission and objectives of the EBC.
The James D.P. Farrell Brownfields Project of the Year Award is awarded to a Brownfields project in which an EBC member organization has had significant involvement and that serves as an example of excellence notwithstanding the social, economic, technical and institutional challenges imposed.
