International Wire Announces Improved First Quarter 2014 Operating Results

May 9, 2014

CAMDEN, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- International Wire Group Holdings, Inc. (the “Company”) (OTC Pink: ITWG) today announced its results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2014. First quarter 2014 operating income was higher than in the first quarter of 2013.

“Solid first quarter results were driven by higher demand across all markets in our Bare Wire segment, increased plant utilization and lower medical costs,” said Rodney D. Kent, Chief Executive Officer of International Wire Group Holdings, Inc.

First Quarter Results

Net sales for the quarter ended March 31, 2014 were $194.3 million, a decrease of $6.8 million, or 3.4%, compared to $201.1 million for the same period in 2013. This decrease was primarily due to a lower selling price of copper and a higher proportion of tolled copper. Tolled copper is customer-owned copper. The value of tolled copper is not included in net sales and costs of sales. Excluding the effects of lower copper prices and a higher proportion of tolled copper processed, net sales increased $5.4 million, or 2.9%, versus the 2013 period. This increase was due to higher volume, primarily in the Bare Wire segment, from increased customer demand in all major markets except the medical electronics and European markets ($7.3 million) and favorable currency exchange rates ($0.6 million), partially offset by lower customer pricing/mix ($2.5 million). Total pounds of product sold in the first quarter of 2014 increased by 7.9% compared to the first quarter of 2013.

Operating income for the three months ended March 31, 2014 was $14.5 million compared to $13.1 million for the 2013 period, an increase of $1.4 million, or 10.7%, primarily from higher sales volume, higher plant utilization and lower medical costs.

Net income of $5.2 million for the three months ended March 31, 2014 increased by $0.5 million from the prior year period level of $4.7 million. The increase in net income was due primarily to higher operating income partially offset by an increase in the income tax provision in the 2014 period.

Net income per basic and diluted share of $0.86 and $0.81, respectively, for the three months ended March 31, 2014 increased by $0.10 per basic share and $0.06 per diluted share from the 2013 period net income of $0.76 per basic share and $0.75 per diluted share. The increase in net income per basic and diluted share resulted primarily from higher net income in the 2014 period compared to the 2013 period.

Net debt (total debt less cash) was $259.6 million as of March 31, 2014, representing a $3.6 million decrease from December 31, 2013 primarily due to higher accounts payable, accrued liabilities and accrued interest, partially offset by higher inventory, higher accounts receivable and lower cash due to the repurchase of common stock.
