May 9, 2014

New York stocks ended higher Friday, with the Dow index extending its winning streak to a third day to close at an all-time high on growing optimism over the U.S. economy.

The 30-issue Dow Jones Industrial Average added 32.37 points, or 0.20 percent, to end at 16,583.34, surpassing a record posted April 30. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index rose 20.37 points, or 0.50 percent, to 4,071.87.

The Dow index climbed after the release of better-than-expected wholesale inventory data. Investors grew hopeful on the steady recovery of the U.S. economy, a market source said.
