May 09--SUNBURY -- Shikellamy school board members approved a final proposed $41.6 million 2014-15 budget at Thursday night's meeting. It includes a 3.25-mill real estate tax increase, but by the time the final budget is voted on June 17, officials said the increase will only be 2.25 mills.
"We will find savings of one mill by then," board Vice President Wendy Wiest said. "It's important for people to realize that this is still a proposed budget, and it does include a larger tax increase than will be finalized."
Under the proposed budget, millage would be 84.25 mills, or $8.43 of tax per $100 of assessed real estate value.
Superintendent Patrick Kelley noted that before the final vote, there will be three sessions addressing the budget, which by state law must be balanced and finalized by the end of June.
Board President James P. Hartman reminded members that the teachers contract expires June 30 and said there have been negotiations. No specifics were given.
