May 8, 2014

Tokyo stocks edged up early Friday morning on an overnight rise in the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 1.94 points, or 0.01 percent, from Thursday to 14,165.72. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 1.91 points, or 0.16 percent, to 1,161.92.

Gainers included air transport, nonferrous metal and rubber issues while brokerage and metal issues lost ground. Some export-oriented issues were sold as the yen rose against the euro after European Central Bank President Mario Draghi hinted the bank could implement additional monetary easing in June.
