May 08--ASHLAND -- Combining their love of authentic country music with their talents for harmonies and guitar, the duo She & I will bring their music to the streets of downtown Ashland at noon Friday as part of the Melodies & Masterpieces series by the Arts Council of Northeastern Kentucky.

Guitarist "Texas" Dave Jaquez said he was born in New Mexico, but lived in the Lone Star State for many years before moving to the Tri-State.

"I'm all hat and no cattle in the witness relocation program," he joked to another musician while setting up for a Tuesday evening performance on the patio at Callihan's American Pub & Grill.

Jaquez said he has been playing guitar "since I was a small child ... 30-plus years," and has been fortunate to share stages with prominent Texas and Nashville-based bands. The Proctorville resident works at 4 O'Clock Rock Guitar Shop in Ashland and is the lead guitarist for the band Split Decision. For She & I, Jaquez teams his talents with the vocals of musical partner Charlene Smith, an R.N. in the Neonatal Trauma Unit at Cabell-Huntington Hospital and whose job experience includes time as a police dispatcher.

"We've know each other for 15 years -- since Cowboys in Arlington," he said, explaining they "reconnected here," and have finally found time to work up a set of songs "from oldies to '70s folk to modern country." He said Texas music isn't particularly well represented in their current playlist.

"The most Texas we get is George Strait," he said. "We do a lot more of the kind of music I'm accustomed to with She & I."

The free concert series continues on Judd Plaza each Friday through May 23. Next week's concert features father-and-son team Tom and Brendon Wintz performing acoustic rock and country; the final performance in the series will spotlight blues-infused rock by Jeremy Short and Chris Justice of the band Downtown King.
