May 07--APPLETON -- Appvion reported first-quarter net sales of $203.8 million, down 3 percent from a year ago.

The Appleton company's first-quarter operating income was $14.5 million, down from $17.9 million in 2013.

Net sales and volume for the company's thermal papers business declined about 6 percent and 5 percent, respectively, compared to the first quarter of 2013. Mark Richards, Appvion's chairman, president and CEO, said the declines are the result of reduced demand and lower average selling prices for the company's thermal receipt paper.

Carbonless papers net sales were 1.9 percent lower than prior year, while volume rose about 2 percent.
