Govt may not timely achieve wheat target

The Food Department has feared that the Punjab government may not achieve the wheat procurement target during the stipulated period as the growers are showing more interest to sell their produce to the local buyers than the government at the purchasing centres.

Food officials added that the flour mills and local traders were also active to purchase wheat from the farmers. They said that the process of the government in this regard was complicated regarding payment as the farmers have to wait for many days in this respect.

Meanwhile, the issuance of gunny bags had started across the district. The department will procure 510,000 tonnes of wheat in the district as per the government target of Rs1200 per 40kg while the Sindh government has announced Rs1,250 support price of wheat for the same quantity. The food department would pay Rs7.50 additionally as devilry charges to the farmers against each 100kg wheat bag. The department will purchase wheat at five centres set up at Chiniot, Bhowana and Lalian.

Chiniot Assistant Commissioner Shumail Maznoor said that 70,000; 8,800 and 182,000 tonne wheat would be purchased from Chiniot, Lalian and Bhowana tehsils respectively. It will complete its procurement target till May 31 by providing 177,228 gunny bags for the farmer during the first 10 days of the campaign.

Earlier, DCO Dr Irshad Ahmad kicked off the campaign by distribution of gunny bag to the farmers. The assistant commissioners regularly visiting the wheat procurement centres.
