When my brother and I applied for a loan to open an eye clinic nearly 40 years ago, the loan officer asked if there was any way that I could show a positive balance sheet. I understand that current economic conditions make it more difficult to make ends meet, leaving little hope of saving money for a rainy day. We're facing long-term unemployment and chronic underemployment, increased compliance costs for policies like Obamacare, higher prices for our everyday needs like food, and more hard-earned money going to heat our homes and fill our vehicles. These struggles make it more challenging to save money. However they are the very reasons that responsible spending and saving habits are important.
