May 31--Rick Molchany, Lehigh Valley Zoological Society president and CEO the past four years, leaves Monday to become Lehigh County's new director of general services.

Molchany, 55, of Lehigh Township, was unanimously confirmed this week by Lehigh County commissioners.

Molchany is widely credited with overseeing a turnaround in the zoo's books, reducing its reliance on county contributions. He made several appearances in the county board's chambers during the past year as he fought to keep that funding.

Commissioners congratulated him in his appointment and said his departure would be a loss for the zoo.

Molchany was president and CEO of the zoological society for more than four years. He is a former vice president of operations for The Morning Call.

He will serve as the county's representative on the zoo's board of directors, and Shirley Kline, director of development and marketing, will coordinate the zoo's day-to-day operations until a new president is named, according to a news release from the zoo.

"I am proud of what the team and I have accomplished," Molchany said in the release. "I hope that you will join me in continuing to champion and support our Lehigh Valley Zoo."

The General Services Office oversees service and maintenance functions for county facilities, as well public services related to parks and recreation, bridge maintenance, and emergency management, the county website says. It also provides project management services and coordination for construction and renovation projects as well as utility management dealing with electric, gas and telecommunications services.
