May 30--CENTERVIEW -- Crest Ridge High School freshman Dakotta Hunt received a No. 2 rating for his trumpet solo at the state competition at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

"It was really fun," Hunt said. "There were a lot of people there. I didn't really know what to expect. It was quite a shock to see that many people, but I should have expected that because it is state. But, it was nerve-racking to play in front of a judge."

Hunt played Mozart's "Concert Aria."

Hunt became the first Crest Ridge student in more than 10 years to reach state competition May 2.

"He has spent a lot of time practicing and preparing and it has paid off," band director Leslie Chambers said.

Hunt wants to get a higher rating next year.

"I am hoping next year that I get a No. 1 instead of a 2," Hunt said.
