May 30--Three Mon Valley performers have been nominated for Pittsburgh Underground Music Awards next month.
Derek Galiffa, Patt Moorby and Blaine Zentek are seeking fan support through online votes to win the June 28 competition.
Votes will be accepted until midnight Sunday at www.pghundergroundmusicawards.com. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony set for 5 to 10 p.m. at the Penn Hills Senior High School auditorium, 309 Collins Drive, Penn Hills.
The second annual Pittsburgh Underground Music Awards was designed to "celebrate and recognize the hard work that has been put into the underground music scene during the previous year," organizers said.
"DJ Galiffa," 28, of Donora, is nominated in the "Best DJ" category. The owner of Galiffa Productions, he has been a DJ for more than 10 years, covering events throughout the tri-state area, including The Rex Theater on Pittsburgh'sSouth Side, and most recently the nationally televised Sammy Vasquez Jr. boxing fight.
Moorby, 16, of Black Diamond, is nominated in the freshman under 21 category. A Ringgold High School student, he has been rapping for about four years and writing and recording hip-hop music for more than two years. He has performed at the Rex Theater and Satalio's in Mt. Washington.
Zentek, aka "Zennybarz," 27, of Monessen, is nominated for best live performance. A hip-hop singer and songwriter, he is a Douglas Education Center student. He is a U.S. Army veteran, having served a 15-month tour in Iraq as a cavalry scout. He will perform at the June 8 "Underground Hype" artist showcase at the Rex Theater, and is working on his first produced album.
