BRIEF: Mortgage rates fall for fifth straight week

May 29--Average fixed mortgage interest rates continued their descent for a fifth consecutive week this week.

The average rate on a 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage was 4.12 percent in this week's survey by Freddie Mac, compared with 4.14 percent last week and 3.81 percent in the same week a year ago.

On a 15-year, fixed-rate mortgage, this week's average rate of 3.21 percent was down from 3.25 percent last week and 2.98 percent in the same week a year ago.
