Nikkei gains for 6th straight day

The Nikkei stock index eked out a slight gain Thursday, extending its winning streak to a sixth trading day, its longest rally since December, amid optimism over the course of the global economy.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 10.77 points, or 0.07 percent, from Wednesday at 14,681.72, its highest finish since April 7. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange rose 2.51 points, or 0.21 percent, to 1,200.68.

Major gainers included pulp and paper, automotive, and fishery and agriculture issues.
