May 28--FAIRFIELD -- City Manager Art Pizzano has been given a 6 percent raise by City Council, a pay bump Mayor Steve Miller said is justified by Pizzano's "outstanding performance" during his 16 years in the job.

The merit increase -- approved Tuesday by council -- is effective retroactively to March 9, the anniversary date of Pizzano's hire, according to the city staff report.

"He's gone above and beyond all expectations," said Miller, who was a member of the city council that hired Pizzano in 1998.

Pizzano's base salary increased from $157,882 to $167,355 and makes him the top paid city manager in Butler County.

During his time leading the city's administration, the city experienced a boom in development and city services, including the construction of the Community Arts Center, Village Green Park, the construction of two fire stations, a renovated municipal golf course and the development of Huffman Park.

"He was absolutely the perfect hire because that's his background -- planning and building," Miller said.
