iComputer Katy Offers Advice on Recent End of Support for Windows XP

May 21, 2014

Richmond, TX (PRWEB) May 21, 2014

Those with an XP computer were in for a rude awakening on April 8 when Microsoft announced that support for Windows XP was officially ending. Windows XP computer users were left wondering what this all means and what they can do. iComputer Katy Computer Repair can help. The tech support company located in Katy, TX is ready to offer advice and help users understand what this recent news means for them.

The end of support for Windows XP means there will now be no more security updates or technical support for the Windows XP operating system. There will also be no more support for Office 2003. Security updates patch vulnerabilities that may be exploited by malware and help keep users and their data safer. PCs running Windows XP after April 8 should not be considered protected, and it is important to migrate to a current supported operating system to receive regular security updates to protect the computer from malicious attacks.

Those with XP computers should begin by calling iComputer Katy for a free evaluation. They will check the computer to see if there are the necessary drivers and will also check the hard drive, memory and motherboard to detect any hardware problems. After the evaluation, iComputer Katy can advise the customer on the best course of action.

So what are the options for XP computer users?

1. Stay with XP, but install an independent Anti Virus, like Viper, and install Firefox or Chrome as the internet browser. iComputer Katy will do this for a low price of $20. This is not ideal, but it will give the user the best protection until they decide to upgrade.

2. Upgrade the computer to Windows 7 or Windows 8, if it is determined to be possible. The cost of Windows 7 Pro is $99 and Windows 7 Ultimate is $129. If the user wishes to keep their data, the labor cost for a backup, wipe and reload of the new OS is $99. Without the data, the cost is $69.

3. Purchase a new computer, and transfer the data for $69. iComputer Katy has a wide range of refurbished computers and laptops starting at $199.

4. If the user has programs that require Windows XP, but the XP machine is end of life, or the user wants the added protection of Windows 7, then iComputer Katy can install XP Mode on a Windows 7 Pro computer. XP Mode will not work with Windows 8.

It is also important to note that Microsoft Security Essentials will not be available for download on Windows XP after April 8. Those who already have Microsoft Security Essentials installed will continue to receive anti-malware signature updates through July 14, 2015. However, please note that PCs running Windows XP after April 8 should not be considered protected.
