Kids Just Wanna Have Fun

May 20--Travel back into the Stone Age with the Croods, go on a moon-stealing mission with super villain Gru, dance to the tunes of Tina Turner and fly in rocket ships.

These adventures await at parks and theaters this summer. Free and inexpensive film series, music concerts and carnivals in Athens, Decatur, Madison and Huntsville will entertain and amuse children and adults.

Movies

Carmike 12

Decatur's Carmike 12 will kick off the summer with a children's film series on June 5. The $4 ticket price includes admission, popcorn and a drink. All shows begin at 10 a.m. on Thursdays.

Go on adventures with the Smurfs, a gun-toting chameleon and Alvin, Simon and Theodore at Monaco Pictures at Bridge Street Town Centre's free kids' movies. Screenings begin June 2 and take place every Monday and Wednesday through July 30. The Huntsville theater will distribute free tickets starting at 9 a.m., an hour before the movie.

Big Spring Park in Huntsville will bring Hollywood outdoors with "Ghostbusters" on June 13, "Frozen" on July 11 and "Wizard of Oz" on Aug. 15. Movies begin at sundown.

Concerts by the River

Get rolling on the river when Decatur's Paul Stroud Concerts season begins June 2 with Tina Turner impersonator Dorothy Cole. Concerts continue every Monday through July 28. The free concerts begin at 6 p.m. at Rhodes Ferry Park.

Concerts at Huntsville Public Library

Decatur Public Library

With animal visits, T-shirt making and inventions, the library's reading program will keep children entertained. Programs for children up to age 11 take place Mondays and Thursdays at 10 a.m., Fridays at 3 p.m. and Saturdays. Check out these selected events. For a full schedule, visit www.decatur.lib.al.us.

--June 2: Bring a T-shirt and decorate it with cow patterns.

--June 5: Meet a dairy cow, eat ice cream and learn about the "farm to table" initiate.

--June 14: Imagine, build and create during the Lego Hour challenge, 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

--June 16: Magician Russell Davis will entertain at Decatur Mall.

--July 7: Magic and science comes to Decatur Mall with experiments and displays by Birmingham's McWane Center.

Somerville Public Library

Somerville's summer reading program will take place Thursdays in June and July at 11 a.m.

Fun for children

Athens Kiddie Carnival: Rocket ships, a Ferris wheel, carousel, roller coaster and train will thrill children at the annual Athens Kiddie Carnival. The carnival will run Thursdays through Saturdays from June 26 to Aug. 2. Hours are 6:30-9:30 p.m. Each ride costs 50 cents. The carnival is located at 309 East Forrest St., Athens.

Fun for adults

Stein and Dine: The public can feast on German cuisine, wines and beers every Thursday at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center's Biergarten. Admission is free, with food and beverages available for purchase. The event takes place 4:30-7:30 p.m. through Oct. 30.
