BRIEF: Athens bands earn UIL 'Sweepstakes'

May 02--ATHENS -- The Athens High School Bands recently competed in University Interscholastic League Concert and Sightreading competition.

The high school non-varsity band, under the direction of Katherine Barrier, assisted by Donnie Barrier and Kimberly Beard, was awarded first-division ratings in both concert and sightreading competition.

The band performed, "Glorious America" march by King, "As Twilight Falls" by Sheldon and "Abracadabra" by Ticheli.

The high school varsity band, under the direction of Rusty Lay, was also awarded first division ratings in both concert and sight reading competition.

The band performed, "Amazonas" march by Salutari, "Sleep" by Whitacre, and "Rikudim" by Van der Roost.

The high school band had previously received first-division ratings for marching band in October of this school year.

With the band receiving first-division ratings in marching, concert and sightreading, the UIL awarded the band the "Sweepstakes" band award.

This is the eighth consecutive year that the high-school band has received this award.
