We Saved the Post Office--The Historic Southmore Post Office Has Been Saved and Will Continue As A Full Service Post Office in The 18th Congressional District, Announced Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee

WASHINGTON, May 15 -- Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas (18th CD), issued the following news release:

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee announces the preservation of the historic Southmore Post Office located at 4110 Almeda. This Post Office was the historic site of a 1960 civil rights demonstration that became Houston's first sit-ins by Texas Southern University students. Concerned citizens spoke out passionately about the significant historical aspect of this Post Office to Houston and more importantly the neighborhood. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee made it very clear that she would be working with her constituents and the Postal Advisory Committee to make sure this Post Office remained open. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee advocated that the Southmore Station Post Office was a very important economic engine for the U.S. Postal system with the ability to increase and improve its utilization because of the increasing and growing population in downtown Houston, Mid-Town, and surrounding areas including the historic Third Ward.

"I am pleased to announce today the United States Postal Service's decision to keep the Southmore station open in its current location. This is very good news for my constituents in Houston who rely on this Post Office for their mailing needs. I have visited this facility many times and understand how important it is to the local community. I am pleased that the Postal Service's facility review process worked and resulted in a positive outcome," stated Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.

Thanks to the hard work of the National Black United Front, Civic Clubs, Super Neighborhoods, Texas Southern University and many community leaders, the Southmore Station Post Office will remain open and retain a vital service to the community and the City of Houston. It will also be a site reflecting the history of the student sit-ins held by Texas Southern University students to push for Civil Rights under the law in the 1960's.

Press conference will be held at 12 noon tomorrow at the Southmore Post Office located at 4110 Almeda, Houston, Texas.
