May 16--Students in Kory Greiner's art classes at Blackduck High School have worked on projects ranging from graphic design to ceramics this year.

Some of the students have won awards for their work and some have put a ton of time and effort into their creations, which the community is now able to see at the Blackduck Area History and Art Center.

The student art show is being held for the fifth year and Greiner said that ceramics pieces, drawings, painting, some realism and surrealism all will be on display.

Senior Kylie Bamberger's artwork will be featured at the show. She will have several drawings, including one charcoal piece where she replicated the drawing from a photo of a ballerina and her reflection.

"It's definitely something different," she said. "It was the first time I ever did charcoal and it took me forever."

Her time paid off, though, as she was awarded a superior medal in the Section 8A Visual Art Contest for the Minnesota State High School League. She just missed receiving the "Best in Show" honor.

Kylie spoke to a judge after the competition to receive feedback on her work.

"He came up to me and said, 'I'm sorry, if there could have been two winners you would have been the other one,'" Kylie said. "He said it was such a hard choice and it made me feel good but at the same time it's like 'I was so close.'"

One student, junior Ashley Lossing, was able to secure the "Best in Show" honor for her work in graphic design.

"We had to make something with different pictures that all coordinated as one so I used the seasons," Ashley said.

She designed a cube in Photoshop with different pictures of the season on each side with dice in the background and the words "take a chance on life."

Their work will be featured at the student art show along with many other student works.

The student art show has been in the Blackduck Area History and Art Center since May 15 and will be in the Tin Pan gALLErY through May 24. A reception for the students will be held from 4-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 21.

The center is open from 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. To make special arrangement, call 835-5210.
