Tokyo stocks tumble in morning after big losses on Wall St.

Tokyo stocks tumbled Friday morning as investors grew risk-averse after U.S. shares fell sharply on the heels of disappointing economic and earnings reports.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 242.42 points, or 1.70 percent, from Thursday to 14,055.79. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 22.73 points, or 1.93 percent, to 1,155.56.

Major decliners included brokerage, bank, paper and pulp shares.
