May 14--A new live-music venue called Oddbody's Music Room is scheduled to open this summer in space that previously housed McGuffy's House of Rock at 5418 Burkhardt Road in Riverside, Oddbody's co-owner Richard Eckhardt said today.
Eckhardt said he and two co-owners of the new business were unable to reach an agreement with the former owners of McGuffy's to use the name of the music club in the Spin-Kemp shopping center, but did buy some of the furnishings at auction and have applied for a liquor license for the venue. They are scheduled to discuss their plans with Riverside city officials Thursday night.
McGuffy's House of Rock -- previously McGuffy's House of Draft -- was established in 1981, and for more than three decades has hosted rock acts and other musicians, most of them either on their way up in their careers. McGuffy's closed five months ago.
Oddbody's Music Room will be open only on show nights, and expects to book eight to 12 shows a month, mostly national touring acts with some local-showcase shows mixed in, Eckhardt said.
"We're looking to provide good live music of every genre -- we will not focus on any particular genre," Eckhardt said.
Eckhardt said he has always had a passion for live music, and one of his business partners, Skip Murray of Piqua, attended several shows at McGuffy's.
Bob Murray, Riverside's director of planning and economic development, said the new music club "continues a great tradition" set by McGuffy's, and also fills the last vacant space in the Spin-Kemp center. An international grocery also will soon open in the retail center.
"This speaks to the revitalization of Riverside, and it will be a great economic development tool for us," Murray said of the music club.
