National Museum of African Art to Participate in Art Museum Day

WASHINGTON, May 13 -- The Smithsonian Institution issued the following news release:

The Smithsonian's National Museum of African Art will join museums in North America in celebrating Art Museum Day Sunday, May 18. The museum will participate with a guided tour of its latest exhibition "Visions of the Forests: The Art of Liberia and Sierra Leone" from noon to 1 p.m. and discounts in the museum store from 1 to 3 p.m.

"I visit my art museum because ...." is the tagline for this year's Art Museum Day, and attendees will be invited to share their responses to the tagline via Twitter and on the National Museum of African Art's Facebook page with the hashtag #ArtMuseumDay.

This is the fifth year that the Association of Art Museum Directors is uniting its membership to celebrate the event.

- "Visions of the Forests: The Art of Liberia and Sierra Leone" through Aug. 17

- "Africa Reviewed: The Photographic Legacy of Eliot Elisofon" through Aug. 24

- "Lines, Marks and Drawings--Through the Lens of Roger Ballen" through July 20

-"Walt Disney Tishman Collection"; permanent

- "African Mosaic: Selections from the Permanent Collection"; ongoing

The National Museum of African Art is America's first museum dedicated to the collection, conservation, study and exhibition of traditional and contemporary African art.
