Artists wanted

May 14, 2014

May 14--Organizers have begun accepting applications for both artists and possible venues for this year's ArtWalk, set for Sept. 24 through Oct. 12 in downtown Grand Haven.

"We are anticipating really good participation," Grand Haven Downtown Development Authority Director Diane Larkin said. "We already have several of our sponsor venues."

Larkin said they've introduced several changes and tweaks for this year's show -- a significant one being the separation of two categories. The drawing and mixed media categories are now separate.

"It was done based on feedback, because drawing is a particular art and mixed media is an art," Larkin explained.

Also this year, Larkin noted that Chris Protas from Fire Barn Gallery will curate an ArtWalk exhibit based on works inspired from ones found at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

This year will be Larkin's first-ever ArtWalk, and she said she looks forward it.

"I was really excited when I came to Grand Haven to be a part of it," she said. "It is a nice event and we have to keep it going."

Larkin noted that ArtWalk does a good job of bringing new people to the community, and it also helps bring new and existing customers to downtown and other local stores.
