May 13, 2014

Japan will host an international forum in September to discuss women's participation in society in line with the government's push for female empowerment, the Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.

International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde is scheduled to deliver a keynote speech during the three-day symposium from Sept. 12 to be attended by government officials, top executives and other delegates from Japan and abroad who are well-versed in issues related to women's social participation, the ministry said.

The event in Tokyo will include a forum open to the public and round-table discussions involving local and international delegates, the ministry said.

The symposium is part of the growth strategy being pursued by the government of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe who has set a goal of raising the proportion of women in leading corporate positions to 30 percent by 2020.
