May 13, 2014

The cream of UAE and international photography talent gave judges a tough time at the eighth annual Emirates Photography Competition.

Winners were announced on Monday at Manarat Al Saadiyat, on Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi, where the best entries will remain on show until August 16.

The annual competition, designed to encourage and develop photographic skills in the UAE, drew 35,985 images from 8,410 photographers representing 58 countries around the world.

This year's theme 'Decisive Moment' was inspired by the work of Turkish artist Yusof Karsh, praised for influencing a new generation of Arab photographers.

Italian photographer Cristina Garzone took home the top prize of Dhs80,000 for her poignant Ethiopian photographic series 'Pilgrimage to Lalibela'.

First place in the Emirati Photo Award category went to Yousef Al Habshi for his haunting skyline photograph 'Forgotten City', taken in the Yemen capital Sana'a.

Here are some of the top entries from the competition.
