May 12, 2014

Tokyo stocks opened sharply higher Tuesday as investor sentiment was bolstered by the 30-issue Dow Jones Industrial Average's rise to a record closing high for the second consecutive day.

In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 270.26 points, or 1.91 percent, from Monday to 14,419.78. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 19.81 points, or 1.71 percent, to 1,177.72.

Mining, real estate and brokerage shares were particularly strong. Export-oriented automaker and high-tech shares also attracted buying in light of the U.S. dollar's rise to the lower 102 yen range.
