May 12--Tomas Nichols, a sixth-grade student at H.H. Poole Middle School in Stafford County, has been honored with a Prudential Spirit of Community Award honoring outstanding community service by American youth. He received a state honoree medallion at a recent meeting of the Stafford County School Board. and then was honored at the 19th annual presentation of the awards at a gala dinner reception at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. The program is sponsored by Prudential Financials, in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Tomas was one of two state students honored. He led a team that has raised more than $55,000 since 2008 by participating in the Leukemia Lymphoma Society's annual fundraising walk in Fredericksburg. Tomas is a leukemia survivor.
