Saturday Money: Guardian Money triumphs

May 10, 2014

Money editor Patrick Collinson was this week named Journalist of the Year at the annual Headlinemoney Media Awards recognising excellence in personal finance journalism. It was a night of success for writers on the Guardian's Money pages: Donna Ferguson, a regular writer for Money (and author of this week's article on IVF costs) was named Freelance Journalist of the Year, while Money's online blog won Financial Blog of the Year. Hilary Osborne was shortlisted for Mortgage Journalist of the Year, while Miles Brignall was shortlisted for Consumer Champion of the Year.

Patrick Collinson was also named Money Columnist of the Year.

The Headlinemoney awards are judged by a panel of journalists and industry experts, and the Journalist of the Year award is described as its "most coveted prize". The award was presented by Alastair Campbell, Tony Blair's former press secretary.

The judges said Collinson was "deemed to have gone that little bit further than anyone else over the past year when it comes to the business of financial matters". Beating competition from The Sunday Times, the Independent and the Daily Mail, Collinson's award as Money Columnist of the Year was described as "no mean feat in a really high-quality field".

One judge said: "Patrick clearly has a deep understanding of many finance-related issues, but what's more he chooses ones to comment on that have a potentially wider impact across all manner of finance-related issues."

Another added: "He does put the boot in with some vigour, but he doesn't descend into a narrow rant."

Three articles by Ferguson, all published in Guardian Money, were described as "eye-opening" by the judges who awarded her the freelance prize. Ferguson won plaudits for her stories on how supermarkets use customer data and how lenders offer secret mortgage deals.

"There was plenty of variety in Donna's work, which is the hallmark of a decent freelancer."

Emma Lunn, another regular writer for Money, was highly commended for an article about the overcharging faced by single people.
