May 01--PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 328 on Thursday endorsed Providence Mayor Angel Taveras in the race for Rhode Island governor, the Taveras campaign announced.
UFCW Local 328 has about 12,000 members in southeastern New England, representing workers in retail food service, banking, transportation, manufacturing, health care, barbers and cosmetology and recycling. About 5,000 members live in Rhode Island.
"When we negotiated with Angel to unionize C-Town Supermarket, he was fair, honest, and always focused on getting an agreement that worked for everyone," said local president Dave Fleming in a statement. "That's leadership. We have no doubt that he is what Rhode Island needs in a governor."
General Treasurer Gina Raimondo, also a Democratic candidate for governor, has often noted that her grandfather was a founding member of the local meat cutters union.
Asked her response to the Taveras endorsement, Raimondo spokesman Eric Hyers said: "The mayor was a member of UFCW and this isn't a surprise. Gina is proud to have earned the support of eight labor unions already in the race as she rolls out her jobs agenda to grow the middle class."
