Roosevelt students take home top awards at Mother Lode Theater Festival

April 30--Students from Roosevelt School of the Arts in Fresno won top awards at the Mother Lode Theater Festival last weekend at Amador High School in Sutter Creek.

Students from 11 schools throughout California competed in a number of categories. Roosevelt students who took home top awards were the following:

Ranked "superior" were Seniors Emma De Zubiria and Catherine Evangelho for their one-act plays. De Zubiria's play, titled "Time Flies," about the lives of two mayflies, received an award for directing and costume design. Evangelho's play, a comedy-drama titled "Variations on the Death of Trotsky," received an award for directing and sound design.

This fall, De Zubiria will be attending the musical theater program at University of California, Los Angeles. She played the role of "Tzeitel" last summer in the play "Fiddler on the Roof," performed at Roger Rocka's Dinner Theater in Fresno.

Evangelho will attend Fresno City College. She performs regularly in Fresno's Woodward Shakespeare Festival.

Junior Sabrina Lopez and Senior Lucas McKeever each won an award for outstanding individual performance in "Time Flies."

Senior Cailen Fu won best female monologue. This fall, she will attend the theater program at University of California, Irvine.

Junior Isaac Lopez placed second for best male monologue.

Roosevelt's drama teachers are Kathryn Koch and Patrick Tromborg.
