Australia,India : GOVT. approves acquisition of further 58 F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter aircraft

The Government has agreed to purchase a further 58 F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter aircraft.

The cutting-edge fighter in production across the world, the fifth generation F-35 will make a key contribution to our national security.

Along with the Super Hornet and Growler electronic warfare aircraft, the F-35 aircraft will guarantee Australia continues to have a regional air combat edge.

The F-35 will also significantly boost the ADF's intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities.

The first F-35 aircraft will reach Australia in 2018 and launch service with the Royal Australian Air Force in 2020.

The purchase of F-35 aircraft will provide significant financial benefits to Australia, including in regional areas and for the domestic defence industry with additional jobs and production for many indigenous skilled and technical manufacturers.

The aggregate capital cost of $12.4 billion for this purchase includes the cost of allied facilities, weapons and training.
