LONDON (Alliance News) - The owner of Heathrow airport Monday reported higher operating profit for the first quarter of the year as the number of passengers the airport handled rose slightly and the amount those passengers spent in the shops or on car parking also increased a little.

Heathrow (SP) Ltd said its operating profit rose to GBP165 million in the three months to end-March, up from GBP114 million a year earlier, as revenue rose to GBP576 million, from GBP552 million.

The company, which is about to open a new Terminal 2 at the airport and submit refined proposals for a third runway, said its pretax loss narrowed to GBP15 million, from GBP196 million.

Passenger numbers and new retail income per passenger increased 0.5% on the year in the quarter.
