KENYA'sCooperative Bank has been feted at the International Banker Magazine's awards for Africa and Middle East scooping the CEO of the year and best retail banking service prizes.

Coop Bank's CEO Gideon Muriuki emerged the best with judges honouring him for his role in turnaround of the bank from loss making to profitability since he took over in 2001 and his role in the bank's expansion into other African countries, riding on the cooperative model.

This, the judges said, will offer inclusive growth that will propel economies of countries like South Sudan where Coop bank has recently expanded into.

For its retail award, judges said the bank's support through affordable financing, capacity-building and critical technical support has enabled over four hundred co-operatives to offer front-office banking to over two million members.
