Goya Foods has recruited food scientist MeriTerese Racanelli to help it continue to meet consumer demand for healthy foods, the company announced Friday.
Ms. Racanelli will guide Goya's R&D team on the nutritional benefits of specific ingredients, products and recipes associated with U.S. Hispanics' variety of national origins, and will educate consumers on the benefits of incorporating natural foods such as beans and olive oil into their diets.
"We're pleased to have MeriTerese as part of our wellness team and to help us expand our healthy product line while educating our consumers about the overall benefits of Goya products and of Hispanic foods," Bob Unanue, Goya president, said in a news release.
He added that Ms. Racanelli's experience will help Goya customers reduce "various health conditions that are on the rise among the Hispanic community, including diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol and blood pressure."
Ms. Racanelli's appointment comes just in time for Lent, as Goya offers a line of meatless recipes for the Lenten season.

Goya, the largest Hispanic-owned food company in the U.S., offers low-sodium and organic beans, organic brown rice and quinoa, along with its traditional Latino foods.
"I look forward to helping health professionals, Goya consumers, and others learn how Hispanic foods like beans, guava and olives can support disease prevention, good health and fitness," Ms. Racanelli said in the release.
She is a member of the American Society of Nutrition, the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics and the National Hispanic Health Foundation.
Goya was founded in 1936 and distributes more than 2,200 food products from the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central and South America.
