The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) installed Lily T. Garcia as chair of its board of directors on March 18 during the 2014 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition in San Antonio, the association announced.

Dr. Garcia, who will serve as presiding officer of the ADEA House of Delegates and the board, succeeded Stephen K. Young, D.D.S., who became immediate past chair of the board.

"Dr. Garcia brings immense experience and leadership skills to our board," Dr. Young said in a news release.

Dr. Garcia will chair the board through the 2015 ADEA exhibition in Boston.

"As chair of the ADEA board of directors," Dr. Garcia said, she'll "advocate the need to assess and reassess our educational processes and envision a proactive view in the development of the next generation of clinicians, scientists, academicians and community leaders."

She added that if "we can help faculty and students navigate educational processes, they themselves will step into leadership roles that improve ADEA's efforts in addressing the oral health of our diverse population."

Dr. Garcia was a faculty member at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School, where she chaired the Department of Prosthodontics from 2001-2010 and was director of the Division of Advanced Education and External Affairs in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry from 2010-2013. She joined the University of Iowa College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics in 2013 as associate dean for education.

Dr. Garcia chairs the American College of Prosthodontists Education Foundation and is a member of the American Dental Association, the Hispanic Dental Association, the Academy of Osseointegration and the International Association for Dental Research. She was inducted into the International College of Dentists in 2013.

ADEA members include all U.S. and Canadian dental schools and many allied and advanced dental education programs, corporations, faculty and students.
