Ballet dancers, opera singer on Sochi Opening Ceremony card

February 7, 2014

Ballet and opera were on the card for the Olympics Opening Ceremony in Sochi, Russia, but no big-name international performers.

The ceremony was to begin Friday evening Sochi time (11 a.m. EST).

USA Today reported the program would feature opera diva Anna Netrebko singing the Olympic anthem and performances by Bolshoi ballet dancers and music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

An appearance by the Russian pop duo tATu was also scheduled.

"Unfortunately, like London we can't boast a plethora of well-known pop performers," Sochi Opening Ceremony producer Konstantin Ernst told the newspaper.

Music stars One Direction and the Spice Girls took the stage at the 2012 Opening Ceremony in London.
