Tokyo stocks open higher as traders hunt bargains

TOKYO , Feb. 6 -- ( Kyodo ) _ Tokyo stocks opened higher Thursday as investors hunted bargains following recent sharp losses, while market attention focused on a U.S. jobs report for January due out Friday. In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 110.37 points, or 0.78 percent, from Wednesday to 14,290.75. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 5.38 points, or 0.46 percent, to 1,168.02. By sector, paper and pulp, real estate, and information and communication issues gained ground while utility stocks and steel and pharmaceutical shares went down.
