Feb. 05--Hollywood screenwriter and comedian Jeff Valdez will be back in his hometown Thursday to support the Boys and Girls Club of Pueblo County.
Valdez will provide entertainment for the organization's annual Champions of Youth dinner and awards ceremony. The event will be in the Fortino Ballroom at Pueblo Community College.
Valdez, who has only a niece left in Pueblo, said he hopes for a sellout crowd because the club does so much to help local youths -- not only to believe in themselves, but to take responsibility for their successes and failures.
"Please come out for this event," he said during a phone interview from his Beverly Hills home. "We have to invest in these kids, and help them learn to invest in themselves -- to develop a mentality of positive thinking and positive doing."
Valdez said the victim mentality is all too common in Pueblo, and that too many people everywhere expect to get happiness from their work or relationships but don't bring joy to any aspect of their lives."It's about having confidence and positive thoughts, and bringing joy to whatever you do, not walking around expecting happiness and joy to come to you," he said.
Thursday's audience can expect plenty of adult humor -- some related to "Pueblo-isms" and some aimed at capitalism and greed, Valdez said, adding: "I may have left Pueblo, but I didn't leave the rabble-rouser part of me behind."
Expect a few jokes about marijuana, too.
Valdez said he hears them all the time from friends who know of his ties to Colorado.
"I grew up in the streets of Pueblo. I never knew it was illegal," he said with a laugh.
Thursday's awards event will begin with a VIP reception at 5 p.m.
Dinner will be at 6:30 and the awards ceremony is set for 7 p.m.
Individual tickets are $75 and sponsorships are available. For more information, call Janelle Martinez at 564-0055 or email her at janellem@ bgcpueblo.org.
