Sony eyes reviving Vaio computer business with investment fund

February 4, 2014

TOKYO, Feb. 5 -- (Kyodo) _ Sony Corp. is considering setting up a new company with a Tokyo-based investment fund to help revive its struggling Vaio personal computer business within Japan, an industry source said Tuesday.

By tapping the help of Japan Industrial Partners Inc., Sony wants to turn around its Vaio business whose brand power in the Japanese market is believed to remain strong, the source said.

Regarding overseas operations of the Vaio brand, Sony is considering options including pulling out of the business, the source said.

Sony hopes that a drastic overhaul of its computer business will improve its loss-making core electronics operations, according to the source.
