TORONTO - The Canadian dollar closed at 89.86 cents U-S, down 0.34 of a cent from Tuesday's close.

The S-and-P/T-S-X composite index was down 0.40 of a point to 14,188.58.

Volume at 4:15 p.m. Eastern Time was 371.73 (m) million shares.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 18.75 points to 16,198.41.

The Standard-and-Poor's 500 index added 0.04 points to 1,845.16.

In the New York Mercantile Exchange, the gold futures for April closed at 1,328 dollars U-S per ounce, down fourteen dollars and 70 cents.

The April crude contract closed at 102 dollars, 59 cents U-S per barrel, up 76 cents.
