Akerson -- who serves as an adviser to GM for up to a year following his retirement as CEO in January -- will assume the new role immediately. The board elected him to the position.
Akerson led GM through its initial public offering, helping the company return to profitability, recapture its investment-grade rating and shed its government ownership.
He decided to resign as CEO and chairman of GM to help his wife,
