Industry Analyst Jeff Kagan: Smartphone Moves to Lower Price from Tech Features at MWC

At the Mobile World Congress wireless trade show in Barcelona this week, it looks like the smartphone industry is moving from devices with all sorts of technology at a high price, to now include lower tech and lower cost devices to attract new groups of customers, says Reuters, Feb. 26.

Industry analystJeff Kagan offers comment.

“This does not mean expensive, tech heavy devices are disappearing. There are still plenty of them. Just look at Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy for some ideas. However what this does mean is now there is also a push to the mid priced and low price levels. This means more devices for more users,” says Tech analystJeff Kagan.

“As smartphone sales slow because everyone who wants one, has one, this new level is accelerating growth once again. Today customers can find smartphones priced at $100 or even less. This is a new idea and I think it will be hot,” says Technology analyst Kagan.

“This lower price point opens up an entire universe of new customers for smartphone makers and wireless carriers. Not all customers are interested in these lower cost devices of course, but it does widen the market,” says principal analyst Kagan.

“This will impact all handset brands like Apple, Google, Samsung, Nokia, Huawei, Lenovo, HTC, ZTE, Blackberry and in fact the entire wireless market. There are differences. All the new technology and high speed is packed into the higher priced devices. Lower cost devices are typically slower and have fewer features, but they are often still well made,” says Kagan.

“Wireless networks also love this idea. Companies like AT&T Mobility, Verizon Wireless, Sprint, T-Mobile, US Cellular and C Spire love nothing more than having a wider range of device choices so their customers can pick whatever they want,” says Kagan.
