Rep. Sanchez Statement on Defense Budget Preview

February 24, 2014

WASHINGTON, Feb. 24 -- Rep. Loretta Sanchez, D-Calif. (46th CD), issued the following news release:

U.S. Representative Loretta Sanchez (CA-46), senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement in response to Defense Secretary Hagel's budget preview.

"Today Secretary Hagel provided a helpful but incomplete overview of the defense budget for Fiscal Year 2015 and I look forward to seeing the actual budget in March. By its very nature, the defense budget will be a give-and-take process that requires us to consider priorities and compromise.

"I am, however, struck that the Pentagon seems to be banking on Congress repealing sequestration. I think we all hope for this, but the Pentagon should be treated like the rest of the federal government and plan accordingly. I am always surprised that the same Republicans obsessed with spending cuts somehow refuse to consider cuts to our defense budget. Fiscal responsibility must be displayed across the board."
