TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in a meeting with Singaporean Foreign Minister K. Shanmugam underlined his government's willingness to expand ties with the Asian countries, Singapore in particular.
"Expanding relations with the Asian countries is the decision of the government of Wisdom and Hope (the title of President Rouhani's government)," President Rouhani said during the meeting in Tehran on Monday. He pointed to Singapore's capacities for expansion of ties with Iran, and said, "Iran and Singapore make their relations active in commerce, trade, finance and banking sectors." The Iranian president also pointed to Singapore's active participation in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and said, "The Islamic Republic of Iran can link the ASEAN to the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO)." The Singaporean foreign minister, for his part, pointed to the age-old Iran-Singapore relations, and said, "We look for ways to increase our interactions with Tehran." Shanmugam pointed to Iran as a country with ancient history and civilization, and said, "Iran with its 1000-year-old history is able to provide many experiences to Asia, and many people in Asia are interested to become familiar with this culture and language." The top Singaporean diplomat, who is in Tehran at the head of a high-ranking delegation, will also have separate meetings with Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani and other senior officials on issues of mutual interests to boost expansion of mutual cooperation between the two friendly nations. He will also visit the Central city of Isfahan and exchange views with the local officials. Iranian and Singaporean officials have recently increased their contacts in a move to boost bilateral trade ties and cooperation. Â Â Â
