Mobile technology giants are battling it over the Smartphone market, with a slew of announcement for their shiny new kits at the Mobile World Congress at Barcelona. With 18,000 exhibitors and government delegations attending from 160 countries, the whole of the technology world is in town. The massive event started to day and will continue until the 27 th of February. The event is the world's largest mobile phone show, with some 75,000 people in Spain this week to attend the Congress. Some 240 speakers are scheduled to give talks. Among the most high-profile are Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and Virginia Rometty from IBM . ZukerBerg Mark Zuckerberg will deliver tonight`s keynote speech at the Mobile World Congress. He will be joined by technology journalist David Kirkpatrick. Together they will "explore the importance of extending the benefits of ubiquitous internet access to the unconnected world". Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg will give his keynote address for the conference at 5pmUK time. Samsung's "Unpacked 5" Samsung will probably the big buzz at the convention, with the expected release of its Galaxy S5 , its newest upgrade to its bellwether Smartphone, at an event called " Unpacked 5 ", to be announced after the main conference venue. It is reported that the South Korean electronics giant brought forward the release of its latest phone to counter flagging sales of the current model, the S4, released less than a year ago. It is also alleged that the Galaxy S5 could be waterproof like the Sony Xperia Z2 released this morning. The much-anticipated event will take place a couple of hours later in the day. Samsung have also announced updates to their Gear smart watch range, with additional personal training functions and a slimmer design, and introduced two types, the Gear 2 and the Gear 2 Neo, and dropped the Galaxy branding from its smart watch, the Galaxy Gear. The South Korean tech giant will release the new watches in April, beating arch-rivals Apple to bringing a health-tracking smart watch to market. The new Gear 2 device will also feature a camera in the screen rather than the strap and a range of new customization options. The budget Gear 2 Neo model is lighter but lacks a camera. Both models include an infra-red remote control, which can be used to change channels on your TV. But the biggest change in the new model is the ditching of Google`s Android operating system in favor of Tizen, a system developed by Samsung. The watches will still rely on Samsung`s tablets and Smartphones for internet access and are expected to be fully compatible with other devices, despite the change in operating system. Sony Waterproof Sony Xperia Z2 (Photo: Daily Mirror) A new Smartphone from Sony was released, the Sony Xperia Z2 . The Sony Xperia Z2 smartphone was described by the company as "the world`s best camera and camcorder in a waterproof Android smartphone". It was described by gadget website t3 as "a worthy successor to the Z1" adding: "We like the improved screen and we were also particularly impressed by the boosted video capabilities." The website also praises Sony`s future proofing by introducing 4K video capture which is not widely available, but looks set to grow in the future. The Sony Experia Z2 has a 5.2ins, full HD display, Android KitKat software, and a 20.7megapixel camera. It will go on sale in the UK and most of Europe in March. The cost of the phone is unknown at the moment, but it is expected to be somewhere upwards of £500. WhatsApp Voice Only a week after news that Facebook acquired WhatsApp for $19 million; the mobile messaging company announced it will expand to voice communications later this year. Jan Koum, co-founder, said: "We want to make sure people always have the ability to stay in touch with their friends and loved ones really affordably. "We`re going to introduce voice on WhatsApp in the second quarter of this year." Koum said the new service will be start being available in iPhone and Andriod appstores, and later to be expanding to Windows Phone and some Blackberry devices. Other Releases Russian mobile phone company Yota unveiled its dual-screened Android. It will have a quad-core processor and will be available in the U.S. - unlike previous models. There is a second, e-ink display on the back of the phone which should help the phone retain its battery which, in theory, gives 58 to 68 hours of phone use for basic tasks. The phone is expected to cost somewhere in the region of $700. HTC unveiled a mid-market device - the HTC Desire 816 . It`s similar to the HTC One but with a plastic case. It has a 13-megapixel camera and a 5-megapixel front camera and is available in black, green, red and white. However, it did not unveil its successor to HTC One because that is being unveiled on March 25, and will be available in China before the broader release in April.
