Feb. 24--CHAMBERSBURG -- Signs went up to bring attention to the new Chambersburg Real Estate Tax office, located at 401 Lincoln Way East.

Brenda Hill, the newly elected tax collector for the borough, said the move to the building began at the beginning of the year when she was elected to the position.

Hill said that all tax collectors within the county are responsible for choosing a place to operate out of and said she decided to move the office, which was previously operating out of 177 Lincoln Way East.

"The new location was primarily based on the parking situation," Hill said, adding that the new location has additional parking.

"They also don't have to pay to park and it's handicapped accessible," she said.

Hill said that flyers about the new location also will be going to Chambersburg property owners shortly with their real estate tax bills for 2014.

According to the borough website, the 2014 property tax rate is 23.5 mils. Taxes on an single-family home in the borough with an assessed value of $16,847.40 would be $395.92.

Franklin County and the Chambersburg Area School District set their own property tax rates.

The hours for the tax office are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the office can be contacted by calling 263-6565.

Lauren Cappuccio can be contacted at 262-4754.
